Strengthening Partnerships: Matthias Zachert in China

When Matthias Zachert was last in China in 2019, he announced, among other things, the planned construction of an integrated APAC Application Development Center (AADC) in Shanghai. In the meantime, the complex has not only been completed in record time, but is now celebrating its third anniversary. Reason enough for the CEO to travel to China for the first time since the Corona pandemic.

“It is always impressive to experience Shanghai with its fascinating mix of history and high-tech. I was excited to return to this vibrant metropolis for my first visit since the Corona pandemic”, said CEO Matthias Zachert. The Asian country has long since developed from a global production hub into the second largest economy in the world, playing a decisive role in global production and trade. This has also changed the chemical industry in particular: China is the world's largest producer and consumer of chemical products. Experts assume that half of all global chemical sales will be made in the Asian country by 2030 – the figure is already over 40 percent. The Chinese chemical industry benefits from a growing middle class with an appetite for high quality products. Its large population and massive investments in technology make it an important sales market and innovation center that offers many opportunities.

Local innovation to tailor solutions to local needs
The opportunities of this dynamic market were the focus of the CEO's visit this time. It began with a townhall meeting for employees. Zachert took the opportunity to exchange ideas with his colleagues on site. Updates from the business units were then on the agenda. Then the CEO visited the AADC. There, colleagues develop applications specifically for the local needs of the Chinese market. Other items on the agenda included media round table interviews and meetings with the Chinese management team. The visit ended with a customer dinner. Zachert was impressed by the diversity and potential of the Chinese market and emphasized the importance of close cooperation with local partners. “This trip underlines LANXESS's commitment to the Chinese market and marks a further step in strengthening business relations and growth in the region.” emphasized Country Representative Michael Rockel.
